CLIMATE CHANGE THEATRE ACTION is a series of worldwide readings and performances presented in support of the United Nations 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP21) in November and December 2015.

The main goal of the project was to invite as many people as possible, who may not otherwise pay attention to this history-in-the-making event, to participate in a global conversation. Modeled on previous NoPassport theatre actions focused on gun control and the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon BP oil spill, CCTA drew on the expertise and resources of local artists, while being global in scope and uniting multiple countries and cultures around a common issue.

A collection of 1-5 minute plays, songs and poems by writers from all six continents, curated by Caridad Svich, Chantal Bilodeau and Elaine Avila, was made available to producing collaborators worldwide. Over 100 collaborators in 25 countries agreed to host events which were registered with ArtCOP21 and, when technically possible, livestreamed on HowlRound TV.

Some Highlights

• Events were presented on all six continents. In the U.S., 53 events took place in 37 cities.
• Plays were read, performed, adapted into films and audio pieces, presented as part of day-long festivals or stand-alone events, in theatres, high schools, universities, eco-centers, community centers, people's living rooms, on radio, and outdoors.
• Perseverance Theatre in Alaska presented a site-specific performance at the foot of the Mendenhall Glacier.
• Teater Viva's CCTA event in Denmark was part of the town of Hjortshø's annual solstice celebration. The town's people invited refugees from a refugee center nearby to participate in the celebration.
• After violinist Karen Bentley and director Aiste Ptakauske presented their CCTA event in Lithuania, they received offers to tour the show in Belarus, Belgium, Germany and Poland.
• Tewodros Tessema is currently organizing a multi-city tour of a CCTA show in Ethiopia that will teach people about climate change.
